Are Your Supplements Helping or Hurting You?

We live in the age of the supplement. Walk into any pharmacy or scroll through social media, and you'll find pills, powders, and gummies promising everything from a faster metabolism to a longer life. But here's the uncomfortable truth: many of these products may be doing more harm than good.

The Booming and Unregulated Industry

More than half of adults in the United States take dietary supplements to "treat" nearly every health issue or psychological woe under the sun. Yet the industry operates in a largely unchecked space.

The FDA doesn't regulate dietary supplements the same way it does prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Supplement-makers don't have to prove their products are safe or effective before entering the market. As one expert put it, "It's a Wild West out there, so buyer beware."

The Real Health Risks

The consequences of this gap in oversight are showing up in hospitals. Over the last quarter century, scientists have seen a stark rise in liver injury and liver failure linked to supplement use, with 20 percent of drug-induced liver injury in the United States now related to herbal and dietary supplements. Beyond liver damage, patients are also presenting with mood swings, gastrointestinal issues, fatigue, kidney stones, hair loss, and high blood pressure.

Common culprits include green tea extract, bodybuilding supplements sometimes tainted with anabolic steroids, and multi-ingredient products used for hair growth or mental health. In 2024, researchers found that 15 million Americans take compounds known to be toxic to the liver, such as turmeric, ashwagandha, and garcinia cambogia.

The Danger of "More is Better"

Megadosing (taking well beyond the recommended dietary allowance) is particularly risky, especially with fat-soluble nutrients that build up in the body over time. High doses can trigger headaches, heart palpitations, and insomnia. Reactions also vary widely from person to person based on individual genetics and immune function.

When Supplements Actually Help

To be fair, targeted supplementation does have its place. Pregnant women benefit from folic acid to prevent birth defects, older adults often need additional B12, and omega-3s have been shown to support heart health. The key word here is targeted: guided by a real need, not a trend.
