Avocados and Mango: A Heart Protecting Combo

What the Study Found

Researchers recruited 82 adults with prediabetes and split them into 2 groups for 8 weeks. One group added one medium avocado and a cup of fresh mango to their daily meals. The other group followed a calorie-matched diet, with those fruits swapped out for carbohydrate-based foods.

The results were striking. Those on the avocado-mango diet saw their blood vessel function, measured by a test called flow-mediated dilation (FMD), improve to 6.7%.

On the other hand, the control group's FMD actually declined to 4.6%. FMD is a well-established marker of heart health; better scores mean your blood vessels are more flexible and responsive, which lowers your risk of heart disease.

Diastolic blood pressure also improved, particularly in men. Those on the avocado-mango diet saw a reduction in central blood pressure, while men in the control group experienced an average increase by almost 3 times!

Why These Two Fruits?

Avocados and mangoes complement each other nutritionally in a way few other fruits do.

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats (like oleic acid) and potassium, both of which support healthy blood vessels and blood pressure.

Mangoes bring vitamin C (about 50% of the daily recommended value per serving) along with dietary fibre, which helps counter oxidative stress and inflammation, two key drivers of vascular damage.

Together, the combination also significantly boosted participants' total fibre intake and diet quality overall.

The Bottom Line

For the millions of people with prediabetes who face elevated cardiovascular risk, this study offers an encouraging, practical message: adding 2 simple fruits can move the needle on heart health without requiring a complete lifestyle overhaul.
